Administrative Assistant Role Outlook

As an administrative assistant in a previous role, this recent article from the American Society of Administration Professionals (ASAP) grabbed my attention. One of the key points that I embraced is the fact that the administrative assistant role looks different for each individual. Responsibilities may include a wide scope from daily tasks to long term strategic planning and chief of staff deliverables. The focus is shifting from the requirement of formal education and experience to more of a skills-based center. This opens the door for a more diverse pool of administrative assistants to become successful in the role. I found this to be a pivot from requirements of just four years ago when I worked for Corning and was required to earn a college degree before bidding a role as executive assistant. In fact, that is the reason that I enrolled in courses at Penn State World Campus in the first place.
A second point that resonated with me was the encouragement to take a bold career move, which again looks different for each individual. For me, it was reaching out to a previous employer and asking them for the opportunity to return after I chose to leave for another opportunity just five years ago. It took quite a bit of courage and boldness to do that since my departure was not well-receive. However, I was offered to return in an expanded role and have been thriving there for the past year. Through that experience, I learned to be unafraid to ask for an opportunity, to be grateful, and to work hard towards shared goals.
I encourage anyone reading this post to find their inner passion and to pursue it unapologetically, as shared in this article. Know that others are going through similar experiences and make connections with people through organizations such as ASAP that write and share valuable career-centered articles such as this one. Happy reading!
