Core Values at Work and Home

I recently led the creation and implementation of a set of core values for my employer. This process was much more involved and "deep" than I imagined it would be. The thought that core values guide every decision made in a business made me realize that my recent changes in career path had much to do with the quest to align my personal core values with that of an employer. It turns out, there is an increased awareness among many individuals who realize the importance of making sure shared values are at the center of both work and personal life.
One of my favorite core values is stewardship, which involves properly managing and leveraging financial resources. As a business, we make smart decisions throughout each month so that we may gift a needy person (or family) with $1,000 each month. The recipient is chosen from a pool of employee nominations and votes. This aligns with my own personal value of contributing financially to a charity that is close to my heart since they helped me when my daughter was in the hospital as a toddler.
Forbes recently published this article on the topic of aligning workplace and personal values. The benefits are many and range from increased work satisfaction to improved mental health and productivity. I encourage you to read the article and to make strides towards identifying your own core values and making strides to find an employer who shares similar values. It makes a difference when you truly believe in the work that you are doing and how it impacts the greater good.
