What's next after the Executive Assistant role?

Have you ever wondered what's next after the Executive assistant role? I certainly have.
I have often envied those in a Chief of Staff (CoS) role, thinking it was the natural next step for any Executive Assistant (EA). More compensation, more visibility, more organizational impact are the top three reasons why I would like to move on to become a CoS.
I was surprised to read this blog article that challenged my thinking and made me realize that perhaps the CoS role is beyond what I am willing to sacrifice as a mid-career professional with a life outside of work.
I often read articles on professional development and immediately relate and agree with the content. This one, however, makes me continue to think about the role that I serve and the role that I want for the future. Does the title justify the sacrifice of time with my family and the opportunity to leave the office and totally unplug for the day, or the week, or two? Honestly, I think not. While I enjoy supporting an executive role, as an EA, I am able to leave the office and not think about work until I get to the office the next day. Many CoS roles do not have this luxury, and to top it off, they may not be enjoying an increase in compensation or work-life balance.
Although it may not be the case for every CoS, this article certainly warrants the question of whether or not the change in title is worth the status. I encourage you to read the article and make your own opinion on this topic. It is certainly food for thought. Enjoy!
